Wet Underfloor Heating
Water is an excellent conductor. A hydronic underfloor system is where heated water circulates under your floor through a series of sealed pipes. The entire network is heated up by a boiler or a heat pump. This sealed pipe network then radiates heat into the room. Like many heating systems, it can be connected to a thermostat to control fluctuations in temperature at your desired times, thus optimising your comfort.
Hydronic underfloor heating systems are generally very reliable. However, occasionally they can leak, so it’s important to look out for any signs of water damage such as a wet floor or unusual odours. That being said, their energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness – particularly in large areas – far outweigh the negatives.
Dry Underfloor Heating
Similarly, dry underfloor heating uses a network of wires to warm up evenly. For a large space, you can opt for heating mats, and for a smaller space, individual wires which are bent to get a tighter fit.
Due to the metal components, a dry underfloor heating system has a quicker heat-up time than that of its wet counterpart. It is both cheaper to buy and easier to fit than a hydronic system, though generally more expensive to run.
